THE ORIGIN

More than just a sport.

Earlier in my career, I was an Olympian and world record holder. Running has always been more than sport to me — it is freedom, rhythm, and connection with the world around us.

Zola Budd Pieterse, born on 26 May 1966, is one of South Africa's most celebrated middle- and long-distance runners. Internationally recognised for her remarkable achievements and distinctive barefoot running style, Zola competed in the 1984 Olympic Games for Great Britain and later represented South Africa at the 1992 Olympic Games in the 3000 metres.

During her career, she set world records in the 5000 metres in 1984 and 1985 and claimed back-to-back victories at the World Cross Country Championships in 1985 and 1986. Her impressive mile time of 4:17.57, achieved in 1985, remained the British record for 38 years.

After returning to South Africa in 1989, Zola continued to inspire athletes around the world.

In 2008, she relocated to South Carolina in the United States, where she competed in marathons and ultramarathons while raising her family.

She returned home to South Africa in 2020, where she continues to share her passion for running through coaching, mentorship, and inspiring runners of all levels.

Legacy of Endurance

1984

At 17 years old, Zola Budd broke the 5000m world record with a time of 15:01.83.

1985

She broke the record again with 14:48.07, becoming the first woman to run under 15 minutes for the 5k.
